Halo ITSM vs Jira Service Management: how to choose for your service desk

If your developers and engineers already work in Jira, Jira Service Management is the natural starting point. Halo deserves a serious look for on-premises deployment, an all-in-one per-agent price or shift-based teams.

Quick answers

What's the biggest difference between Halo and Jira Service Management?
Packaging and platform. Halo sells one per-agent price "with every feature, module and integration included" (Halo pricing). Atlassian sells plans, with problem and change on Premium and Enterprise, on the same platform as Jira.
Does Halo integrate with Jira?
Yes, by integration rather than one platform: a two-way sync with Jira Service Management, and a Jira Software integration that syncs tickets with Jira issues.

Halo's case against Jira Service Management, and where it holds

Halo argues it's more complete, "without requiring the configuration overhead needed to adapt a development-focused tool". Part is fair: Jira Service Management is configured, not prescriptive, and a lightly configured portal can feel sparse.

"Development-focused" stretches it. Atlassian's strongest case is service and engineering work on one platform. Halo needs design work too: onboarding is a condition of purchase.

Five questions that decide Halo vs Jira Service Management

From ITSM evaluations we've taken part in this year and our implementation work.

Where your data, and your AI processing, sit

  • Hosting regionBoth offer Sydney: Halo on AWS, Atlassian as residency on paid plans.
  • What's pinnedAtlassian pins in-scope data, not user accounts or Assets Data Manager; ask Halo what "local data residency" covers.
  • BackupsAtlassian keeps backups in your location; ask Halo whether its backups stay in Australia.
  • IntegrationsConfirm residency with app vendors and any integration that copies ticket data out.
  • AI processingHalo uses OpenAI or your own provider key; for Atlassian, see our Rovo and Atlassian AI page.

Ask both vendors to run the same scenarios on your data, and write "not shown" for anything skipped.

Meets: works on the plan you'd buy, including vendor integrations. Partly: needs a higher plan, add-on or custom work. Doesn't: not available.

Comparing three-year costs

Build the same lines for both, from quotes. Concurrent licences can cut Halo's line for shift teams, while one team's need for problem or change prices every Jira Service Management agent at Premium. Atlassian can't quote cloud in AUD and adds 10% GST; Halo shows AUD. See our Jira Service Management pricing guide.

  • Licences: concurrent or named agents, plus growth.
  • Onboarding or implementation: Halo's package, or your team's or a partner's time.
  • Integrations: Jira, Intune, identity and any connectors.
  • Administration, and usage: Atlassian charges above allowances; Halo is "priced only by the number of agents".
  • Migration and paying for both until cutover.

HaloYou need on-premises or private cloud, pooled licences for shift agents, or everything in one per-agent price, especially when Jira isn't central.
Jira Service ManagementYour engineers already work in Jira and Confluence, incidents link to software delivery, many users only view requests, or you serve external customers too.

Frequently asked questions

Can we move from Halo to Jira Service Management?

Yes. Recount licences, because a concurrent pool can become more named agents, and set request types by ID, not name, in CSV imports. Our helpdesk migration service covers moves off Halo.

Can Halo and Jira Service Management run side by side?

Yes, through Halo's integration, though "Only tickets that are linked to Jira requests can have comments synced".

Is Halo only for managed service providers?

No. Halo sells IT service, enterprise service, customer service and CRM products alongside its PSA.

“Senzo brought a clear, thoughtful approach to our Jira implementation, helping us move from complexity to clarity. They didn’t start with the tool, they began with focussing on our teams different needs to understand our operating model in the Marketing Division, making sure the solution was shaped around how we work. Their ability to get to the heart of our needs stood out. They asked the right questions, challenged our thinking, and helped us prioritise what would deliver the most value.”
