Atlassian licensing in Australia, from a partner prepared to tell you to spend less

Most people land here with a renewal quote open in another tab, bigger than last year's and not obviously explained. We transact Atlassian licences and we review them. This page is about the reviewing.

Bills grow without anyone deciding they should

Small, individually reasonable decisions add up, and the renewal brings them back as a single number.

  • A team was onboarded and given product access
  • An app was trialled and never switched off
  • A plan was upgraded for a capability three people use
  • On seat-based cloud products, dormant users count until deactivated, deleted or removed from a synced directory

What you are actually paying for

Underneath the one number are at least seven licensing and cost layers, and each behaves differently.

  • Licensed usersWho still needs access? Monthly cloud pricing comes in bands, so cost does not track headcount.
  • Jira Service Management agentsLicensed per agent. People raising and tracking requests are customers and need no agent licence.
  • Edition and planEditions differ in capability, so revisit why you upgraded and check you still use it.
  • Marketplace appsVendors set their own prices, so audit app spend rather than assume it.
  • Renewal datesA term of up to twenty-four months, on request, can bring dates into line.
  • Term and commitmentMonthly bills the highest seat count in the cycle. Annual bills a user tier fixed for the term.
  • AdministrationAtlassian does not accept purchase orders as payment, which can add procurement steps.

The best time to look at this is not when the renewal arrives

Sixty days is enough to pay an invoice, not to reduce users, retire apps and align dates. Start several months earlier. Data Center has a second clock: existing customers can renew until March 2029, and no renewal runs past it. Where it leads is Cloud migration.

Disclosure

Yes, we earn margin when you buy your licences through us

We earn a margin on licences sold through us, and will still recommend what your usage justifies, even lower spend. If partner advice is worth nothing to you, buy direct.

Buying direct can make sense when

  • Licensing is straightforward and understood
  • Renewal administration is low-effort
  • You do not need licensing advice

A partner can make sense when

  • Users, apps, plans or renewal structure need review
  • Several subscriptions or dates need coordinating
  • Procurement wants help with the process

The free renewal review

Deliberately bounded, so it is the same offer every time. Licensing sits inside our wider Atlassian consulting practice.

  • What it isA senior consultant reads your quote, subscription summary and app list. No environment access.
  • What you getA short written summary, layer by layer, and what looks worth changing. You keep it.
  • What it is notCost modelling or an environment audit. Those we quote as paid work.
  • What happens nextConversation, then review, then recommendations.

Frequently asked questions

Does buying Atlassian through a partner automatically cost less?

No. Senzo makes no claim that partner purchase is inherently cheaper than buying direct.

When should an Atlassian renewal be reviewed?

The quote for an annual cloud subscription arrives around sixty days before expiry. Start several months earlier.

Can Senzo reduce our Atlassian licence costs?

Sometimes. A review starts with usage, and may find a reduction or confirm the structure is justified.

Does buying Atlassian licences through a partner cost more than buying direct from Atlassian?

Not necessarily, and we will not claim a partner is automatically cheaper either: Atlassian's published terms give no basis for that promise. If anyone makes it, ask for the commercial basis.

How is Jira Service Management licensed?

Per agent: a user who works tickets and communicates directly with your customers. People raising requests are customers and need no agent licence. That model is specific to Jira Service Management.

How do we reduce our Atlassian licence costs without breaking something?

Start with usage, not price: who still needs access, which agents do agent work, whether you use your edition, which apps have users and an owner. Then model the effect. Sometimes that confirms the current structure.

What changes if we transact through Senzo?

Support stays with Atlassian, through your Support Entitlement Number. Renewal dates change only if you choose. Quoting and purchase orders move to us. At term end you can renew through us, another partner or direct.
