What does Atlassian actually do?
Atlassian calls its products "apps" (Atlassian's apps page); you can start with one and add others later.
| App | What it helps teams do | A simple example |
|---|---|---|
| Jira | Plan, track and report on work | A software release or a system upgrade |
| Confluence | Share knowledge as pages in spaces | Team procedures and meeting notes |
| Jira Service Management | Take in and resolve requests and incidents | An IT help desk handling outages |
| Loom | Record and share short videos | A two-minute walkthrough instead of a meeting |
| Trello | Organise work as cards on boards | A small team's task board |
| Rovo | Search and get AI help across your work | Finding a past request |
How Atlassian's products work together
The value is in connecting work, knowledge and service, not in owning several apps. In Jira Service Management, customers raise requests by portal, email or other channels, and agents work them from a queue. In Jira, tasks are work items in spaces.
Example: when the payroll system goes down
Each organisation sets up these links; Atlassian calls the layer mapping them the Teamwork Graph.
- 01
The report (Jira Service Management)
An employee raises a request; an agent records an incident and keeps them updated.
- 02
The fix (Jira)
The agent links it to a work item in engineering's Jira space.
- 03
The know-how (Confluence)
The fix goes in a Confluence space linked as the knowledge base, subject to permissions.
- 04
The walkthrough (Loom)
An engineer adds a two-minute Loom of the workaround.
- 05
Finding it next time (Rovo)
Where set up, Rovo Search can surface the incident, fix and article, and "respects your user permissions" (What is Rovo). See our Rovo explainer and Rovo and Atlassian AI page.
Atlassian products and collections
Atlassian also sells collections. Jira and Confluence can start on their own, but new customers get Jira Service Management through Service Collection.
| Collection | Suits | Apps | How it's sold (19 Oct 2026) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Teamwork | Planning and knowledge | Jira, Confluence, Loom, Rovo | Online, one price; Free for 10 users (pricing) |
| Service | IT, HR and service teams | Jira Service Management, Customer Service Management, Assets, Rovo | Online, Free for 3 agents, or sales (pricing) |
| Software | Engineering | Rovo Dev, DX, Pipelines, Bitbucket | Sales, or Rovo Dev alone; apps also sold separately (page) |
| Product | Product managers | Jira Product Discovery, Feedback, Rovo | Early Access waitlist; needs Jira Product Discovery Premium (page) |
| Strategy | Leaders | Focus, Talent, Align, Rovo | Sales only, Cloud only; needs Jira Cloud Premium (page) |
Other apps, and Marketplace apps
Atlassian also sells Guard for cloud security (see our Atlassian Guard guide), Statuspage and Sourcetree. Opsgenie is being retired, its capabilities moving into Jira Service Management; our Opsgenie end-of-life guide has the dates. Marketplace apps are third-party add-ons, more than 6,000 of them.
Atlassian Cloud vs Data Center
For an organisation new to Atlassian, Cloud is the starting point. See our Data Center end-of-life guide and cloud migration page.
- CloudAtlassian hosts it and takes responsibility for the applications' security, availability and performance.
- Data CenterSelf-managed, closed to new customers since 30 March 2026. Jira Software, Jira Service Management and Confluence Data Center reach end of life on 28 March 2029; extensions are "by exception only".
- ServerThe older self-managed option, unsupported since 15 February 2024.
- ExceptionsJira Align and Bitbucket Data Center are outside end of life, which isn't the same as open to new customers. Existing Bitbucket and Bamboo Data Center licences remain available until 28 March 2029, then are sold only through the Bitbucket Hybrid License, planned for existing customers from early 2027.
How Australian organisations buy Atlassian
- Start freeSites start on Free: Jira and Confluence for 10 users, Jira Service Management for 3 agents, Trello for 10 collaborators per Workspace. Standard trials run 14 days, Premium 30.
- Apps or a collectionA collection can be good value when your teams use most of its apps.
- Monthly or annual, in US dollarsCloud can't be quoted or invoiced in Australian dollars. Jira is priced per user, Jira Service Management per agent: see our licensing page and Jira, Jira Service Management and Confluence pricing guides.
- What support coversPaid plans add Atlassian Support, but not advisory, training or installation: for those, Atlassian points to its Community or Partners, and its Professional Services team offers advisory and implementation.
Buying directly or through a Solution Partner
A small team with standard needs can buy online and set the apps up itself, and a partner doesn't automatically lower the licence price (our Platinum partner page explains the levels). Independent planning is worth it when you have:
- Several departments or subsidiaries
- Existing Jira sites to bring together
- ServiceNow or another helpdesk to leave
- Workflows or integrations across teams
- Enterprise identity and governance needs
- Data residency or compliance obligations
- Significant licence spend
A partner earns its place through design and delivery, avoiding licences and rework you don't need.
What to understand before you adopt Atlassian
Our team includes people who worked at Atlassian (About page). That background and our implementation work shape three points.
What newcomers commonly get wrong
| The assumption | How it works | What to do instead |
|---|---|---|
| Jira and Jira Service Management are separate systems | They share one platform | Agree the fields, statuses and naming they share |
| Everyone on the service desk needs a licence | Jira Service Management is licensed per agent: a user who can work on tickets and communicate directly with your customers. Customers do not require an agent licence. | Count the people who work requests |
| Every Marketplace app comes from Atlassian | Marketplace Partners sell their own | Check each app's publisher, cost and Cloud version |
| Monthly and annual billing work the same way | Monthly is per user; annual is by user tier | Size the annual tier for the whole term |
| Assets is a separate purchase | Included from Service Collection Standard, with allowances by plan | Budget time to design the model and load data |
The first decisions that matter
Cheapest to get right early, slowest to undo.
- 01
Where your data lives
Sydney residency needs Standard or above, excludes user account information, and Marketplace apps have their own conditions.
- 02
One site or several
Merging sites later is a migration project.
- 03
Who owns identity and access
Agree admin roles, sign-in and whether you need Guard before inviting everyone.
- 04
Collection or apps, and which plan
Trial the Premium features you think you need. Residency needs Standard or above; the Strategy and Product collections each need a Premium plan first.
- 05
Defaults first, customisation second
Start with Atlassian's defaults; every customisation needs maintaining.
- 06
Who sets it up and runs it
Your team, a Solution Partner or both; see our Atlassian consulting page.
“Senzo brought a clear, thoughtful approach to our Jira implementation, helping us move from complexity to clarity. They didn’t start with the tool, they began with focussing on our teams different needs to understand our operating model in the Marketing Division, making sure the solution was shaped around how we work. Their ability to get to the heart of our needs stood out. They asked the right questions, challenged our thinking, and helped us prioritise what would deliver the most value.”
