Jira Service Management vs ServiceNow: a practical comparison for Australian teams

Jira Service Management and ServiceNow both cover core IT service management. The useful question is which fits the service management you will run, the teams it connects, and your budget and skills.

Quick answers

Which costs less?
Atlassian publishes per-agent prices; ServiceNow's pricing page offers a custom quote rather than published prices. Compare the plan and package that hold the features you need.
Which is faster to get live?
Both vendors say weeks; neither sets a typical duration. Integrations, configuration data and request redesign set much of the timeline.
Can Jira Service Management do what ServiceNow does?
For core IT service management, Atlassian documents request through to knowledge management, with problem and change management on Premium and Enterprise. ServiceNow's wider platform reaches into operations, security, HR and portfolio management.

What each platform is built to do

Jira Service Management Cloud covers seven practices, from request to knowledge management. Problem, change and advanced incident features sit on Premium and Enterprise; Free and Standard keep incident queues, alerts and on-call. It shares Jira's platform, hence Atlassian's "One platform from code to customer".

ServiceNow's ITSM aims to "Unify incident, change, problem, and service request management on one platform", one product among many on its products page. If you will run several on one data model, and fund dedicated platform skills, that breadth is a genuine reason to choose ServiceNow.

Senzo is an Atlassian Platinum Solution Partner, so ServiceNow facts link to ServiceNow's own pages, and where ServiceNow is stronger, we say so.

What drives cost on each side

Neither platform has one price to compare. ServiceNow doesn't publish ITSM prices, so compare the structure: what you pay for, and what moves it.

  • Agents, not requestersJira Service Management licenses the people who work tickets; customers need no licence. Current prices.
  • Usage above allowancesAtlassian lists USD charges per Assets object and virtual service agent conversation.
  • Automation steps"Automation usage is measured in steps", pooled across your Atlassian apps; extra usage billing starts 3 December 2026.

  • ServiceNow: a quoteThree packages and a "Get Custom Quote" button: ask what the quote contains.

What should a three-year cost comparison include?

Year 1 carries delivery, integrations and any move; from Year 2, recurring costs carry the comparison.

Time to value: how fast can each go live?

Atlassian claims a "weeks-not-months deployment"; ServiceNow says "Start your IT service desk in weeks" with ITSM Foundation's AI-guided setup. Neither sets a typical duration: scope does, and a team already on Jira, or with ServiceNow developers, starts from a different place.
